Heinz Scholarship Summary

The Global Studies Center (GSC) at the University of Pittsburgh offers scholarship opportunities for individuals from developing countries demonstrating their potential as future leaders in the public, government, nonprofit, or private sectors.

About Heinz Scholarship

Heinz Stipends (also known as Fellowships) are awarded to individuals from developing countries who demonstrate their potential as future leaders in the public, governmental, nonprofit, or private fields. The goal is to enhance, early in their career, a fellow’s ability to contribute to the development of their country and enrich their understanding of the United States. Beginning with the 2012-13 academic year, the scholarship was reorganized to align with specific master’s degree programs at the University of Pittsburgh Professional Schools.

The GSC no longer processes Heinz applications directly. Applicants interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the professional school to which they applied after receiving acceptance.

Selection conditions

During the residency, the recipient of the scholarship is required to present at least once a subject related to their professional experience before members of the University. Increased participation is also encouraged, prompting the scholar to become involved in community outreach activities, such as giving lectures about their home country to audiences of high school students or interested adults.

Commitment and duration of the scholarship:

Acceptance of the scholarship by the candidate amounts to a mutual agreement between the scholarship holder and the University. It is expected that, except in the event of an unforeseen emergency, beneficiaries will remain present for the entire period covered by the scholarship.

Any recipient leaving the United States or terminating the award before the date specified in the grant authorization, without the prior consent of the University, will be required to reimburse all expenses incurred by the University on their behalf.

Final Reports and Impact:

At the conclusion of the Heinz Fellowship program, recipients are required to submit a detailed report describing and evaluating all of their activities and experiences during the fellowship period. They must also outline their plans for applying for the scholarship upon their return to their country of origin.

These reports are of particular importance, being distributed to program officials at the University of Pittsburgh and representatives of the HJ Heinz Company Foundation. They will also serve as references for future recipients of the scholarship. Following approval of their final report, recipients will receive a UCIS Heinz Program certificate.
